A Flower in the Lens

The problem with flowers is that they are so inherently beautiful that any photograph of them, any botanical description, or any poem, falls far short in conveying their form, their aesthetic characteristics. In taking a photograph, we are simply saying, “I see you”.  But the image will always pale in comparison with the real thing.

So, as a photographer, I won’t try to “capture” the flower. But I’ll work with the image, hoping to extract something of the flower; the color, the texture, the lines.

More than three months ago, we planted a dahlia tuber in a pot on the patio, and only in the past few weeks has it started flowering, each bloom a miracle of nature. The flowers are “spikey” in shades of purple and pink but, in this manipulation, I’ve discovered a softness, a delicateness under its surface. As time goes by, I hope post more flower-based creations.
